There I was, blood all over the walls, pants around my ankles...HELP!
My girl Cali goes through various phases of interests, or rather OCD obsessions. Nothing off limits, from having to skip sideways every 3 steps, to having to touch everything, to my favorite the snip snip phase. Bear in mind, Cali is extremely strong willed, hardly feels pain, and is the child that will continue to do what you tell her not to do, even after she gets hurt by it.
Cali started the snip snip phase about a year ago, and nothing was safe. She would cut up EVERYTHING! Boots, toys, bedding, purses, toys, doll hair, and yep, her hair. No amount of telling her "no" would work. I tried time outs, flicking her hand, showing her what she did, but still, if she found scissors, she would "snip snip".
So my next step was to hide the scissors. I've hidden them under clothes, on top of cabinets, even taped behind the toilet. She somehow found them everytime....until I hid them under some food in the freezer, finally, I could put an end to the "snip snipping".
Ok, lets get back to that title shall we. I'm sure you're anxious to hear how that all happened and how it ends. Honestly, it really was my fault. I had all of my tools out and was sorting all the nuts, screws, bolts etc. into various compartments in a fishing box to finally organize everything. In my tool set is a pair of scissors. Here's where I made the mistake....I ran to the bathroom. Seconds after I sit down I here a snap, a bang and an "uh-oh". Next walks in Cali, with her left thumb just dripping blood, in a constant stream. She had tried to cut the tail off of a toy dinosaur, (which she stole by the way but we'll get back to that) and in the process, ended up cutting the pad of her thumb clear off!
So now I am frantically trying to wrap her thumb in toilet paper to try and stop the bleeding. This is where it got tricky, Autistic kids don't like to be held, so the more pressure I am putting on her thumb the more she is trying to pull away. Finally she pulls her hand away from mine, blood splatters against the wall follow by another "uh-oh". Again I am grabbing wads of toilet paper, while simultaneously trying to pull my pants up and hold pressure on my child's severed thumb. Needless to say we both end up sitting on the floor in my bathroom, she's got a whole roll of gauze wrapped around her thumb, I'm wiping blood off of everything and trying to keep her from ripping the dressing off, quite unsuccessfully.
At this point, I called in the troops. I've got some friends that live next to me and were in my bathroom helping in no time. (Thanks Kaylee and Jared) And the 3 of us managed to get her to the hospital. Here's the best part.....she didn't even cry! The only time she cried was out of frustration when we wouldn't let go of her thumb haha. I'm fairly convinced that my daughter is part superhero.
